Happy Sunday! Well, that might be some sort of oxy moron, but still. I’ve had a whirlwind weekend, and next week and next week is going to be insane as well. I’m going to Las Vegas with my dad next weekend, because that’s where all fathers and daughters go for quality time right?
Anyway, I don’t have much in the way of photos from the past few days except this one. Last weekend, Mitch’s grandmother passed away, and yesterday, just like last year when his grandfather died a little over a year ago, the family and close friends gathered at Mitch’s dad’s house to be together and remember a great woman. I obviously only knew Evelyn for the past (almost) 4 years, during which time she had already began suffering from dementia, so it was really nice to hear about the person I didn’t get to know. Now I know where Mitch and his father got their party-throwing skills as everyone kept mentioning her hospitality and how she loved entertaining and hosting parties.
Mitch’s cousins put together this awesome slide show of photos from Evelyn’s life, and I probably spent a good half hour watching it. I LOVE old photos and I told Mitch that we have to be better about taking more photos because I want our lives documented like that. I actually hate having my photo taken, I think it’s holdover from my heavier days. Anyway, here’s me watching the slideshow and Mitch making a face at the camera. Oh and Nina in the corner.
So that was yesterday, and today I did more laundry than I should ever do at once again, and did my first “long run” for marathon training. That’s right, if you couldn’t tell from this post’s title, I have started working out per my training plan for the America’s Finest City Half Marathon. To be honest, I’m still freaked out that I’m actually doing it, so I’m just taking it one week at a time. My “goal” is to post every Sunday night with a recap of my workouts that week so that when it’s all over, I can have a record of what I did and how I felt.
So this week, I did:
Monday: 20 min detox yoga from Yoga Download
Tuesday: 2 mile run with Nina. I ended up doing some run/walk intervals because I was trying to really book it when I was running (I’m going to get faster if it kills me!) and also because running with the dog is a big pain. She’s lucky she’s cute.
Wednesday: Bikram yoga. I counted this as cross-training. Oh man…that Bikram is no joke.
Thursday: Ran 2.5 miles with J, my partner in half-marathon crime (not sure if she wants her full name on the blog). Was supposed to be 2 but I read the schedule wrong (sorry J!).
Friday: Walked Nina up the hill in the morning (45 min) and lifted weights for an hour after work
Saturday: Rest day, so I took Nina on the wussy walk, more stroll-like. It was maybe 2 miles.
Sunday: First long run, like I said. 3 miles but J was getting a side cramp and I was feeling the rum and coke zero from the night before so I was struggling too. Next time, we’ll hydrate better!
I know Nina going to get the shaft (or, more trips to the dog park) when I start doing more mileage, because I really want to be better about giving myself rest days. But, I think for my first week with only 7.5 miles for the week, it worked.
I get SO mad when I have to stop to walk, but maybe I should get over that…or maybe I should let that motivate me not to walk? I don’t know.
Do you think you can say you “ran” a half marathon if you didn’t run the whole thing? I say yes, I know (and date) people who say no.
I have a few more things to share with blog land, but it’ll have to wait. I have dishes to wash, tea to drink, a reality show to watch, a workout schedule to plan, a mother to call….oh and I’d like to be in bed in an hour and half. Oh, Sunday nights…

I think it counts even if you walk but that’s just me. To each their own. I could see how stopping to walk is not actually running a half but I think that if you are running more than you are walking, it counts.
PS – this would have been a prime opportunity to post Nina pictures w/o looking like a totally fur-baby-crazy-lady and you totally missed it. I think I’m going to cry myself to sleep tonight.

Just saw the title of your post on another blog and wanted to say good luck!! It’s such an amazing journey to take on! Yes you can say you’ve done a half marathon and you’ve run it even if you did run/walk.

Hahaha, Leah’s comment made me laugh
I think it still counts as “running” when you take walk breaks. Especially in long distances. Anything over 10k and I walk for 30-60 seconds every mile. Otherwise I just burn out. Plus, it’s hard to drink water and take shot bloks when you’re bouncing!
I love looking at pictures too. Even of strangers. I guess that’s why I like reading blogs

I think you can definitely still say you ran a half even with some walking breaks. The way I see it is that few people would even make it through doing that. You are achieving a goal of finishing the half marathon. Then, you can move on to a goal of improving that time later if it suits you. But for now, the goal of simply doing one is something to be proud of.

I think you can say you ran it even if you walked part of it. The truth of the matter is you are doing more than most people do exercise wise – own it girl!

I say, as long as you crossed the finish line, you completed a marathon.

I think you can say you ran it if you ran the majority. But if you ran like half and walked half, I think that’s more completing a half-marathon rather than running one.

Hmmmm…I have to agree with Mitch on this one! If you didn’t finish a half marathon, then to say you ran a half marathon is sort of….a lie! Sorry, I mean it wouldn’t be true…right?!
Sorry to hear about Mitch’s grandmother, it’s always sad losing a family member, or anyone for that matter.
Your training sessions sound great! I love that oyu incorporate yoga into your marathon training. That’s fantastic.
