Oh my, am I really a month into my half training! One down, three to go. This week, I feel like I slacked off on my training, but looking at it again, I think I did OK.
Monday: Nothing. I was going to do some yoga, but ran out of time.
Tuesday: 3 miles. I don’t remember my time, but I think I did good. I mean, I did it, right?
Wednesday: Nothing. I mean, “rest.” I went to Costco after work, by the time I came home it was almost 7 and I still had to cook dinner, etc. I had plans for Bikram but those feel through and I didn’t replace it with anything. I felt a bit like a slacker at this point, since I had taken Monday off too.
Thursday: (My birthday, I might add) I went running in the morning on a new (to me) route, and then after work I went to the gym to try my hand again at Susan’s full-body workout. I’d say this time I got about 3/4 of the way through it, so not bad!
Friday: Took Nina for a 45-min walk. It was pretty hot out, and since I was sore from Thursday, I felt like it was some good effort on my part. Sometimes my Nina walks are leisurely and sometimes they’re a real workout (even though it’s the same route, isn’t that funny?). This was the former.
Saturday: Gym day. I started with 20 min (plus 4 min warm up/cool down) on the elliptical interval program. I kept pushing the incline and resistance up, so I think I got some good cardio for 20 min. Then I tried to make up my own workout. I feel like when I do my own thing, I am skipping body parts and I’m going to become some lopsided weirdo.
I did the following as alternating sets, 10 reps, 3 times through for each pair of exercises:
incline push-ups/squats with 20 lb dumbbell
assisted chin-ups (underhand grip) 88 lbs/bent-over dumbbell rows (20, 15, 15)
overhead tricep extension (20 lb)/Romanian deadlifts (50 lb barbell)
And then I went home. I was going to do abs but I ran out of energy and time. I WILL do abs on Monday though, and I figure if I concentrate on keeping my core engaged during the movements, I’m ok.
Sunday: 4 mile run. Actually more like 4.14, I’ll have you know. I was still kinda sore, but I think running when you’re a little sore helps get out the lactic acid, or something like that.
I had a stressful morning, so it was really good to run out some frustration and chat about life’s little dramas with a girlfriend. Venting and endorphins make everything better. That’s why I feel sorry for people who don’t exercise.
So all in all, I think I did ok this past week. Not fantastic, but not terrible, by most standards.
Next week will be tough since we’re opening a big exhibit at the end of the week (but then we’re done with openings until the fall!) but I’m determined to get my workouts in. I feel like I just have to get through this week and then my vacation the week after (YAYYYY) and then my exercise routine will be more stable until the half. Of course, something always comes up, but I should (key word) be able to get in all the workouts this summer, barring some craziness.
What is your workout philosophy when you’re on vacation? I would love to stick to my regular exercise schedule, especially since I’m going to be gone for 9 days, but I have a feeling that a few workouts might be scarified in the name of…well…wine. I know I’ll be walking a lot so I’m not overly concerned and besides, with grad school looming and my bank account not getting any fatter, this is the last vacation I’ll take in a million years, or something like that.
I’m doing another live TV spot in the morning. Wish me luck!

I always try not to stress about workouts and my eating on vacation. That doesn’t mean I let it all go by the wayside, but I just don’t have a rigid plan on wanting to be sure to get in x workouts and not too much of x food, etc. I take each day at a time and if I feel like doing something like a run I will. And for food, I try to still make mostly healthy choices but will indulge in things I really want. I never leave vacations 10 lbs heavier and I get to enjoy the entire thing. I bet you will be fine if you don’t make yourself stick to your training plan.

Yup! I always tell people to pretend like they’re about to get punched in the gut when they’re lifting weights. Gives you more power in your other movements too
I usually try to get in a workout every other day when I’m on vacay. If I work out 5-6 times a week at home, then 2-3 times on vacation is good enough for me
And like you mentioned, tons of walking is always involved.
Hope the TV spot went okay today! I’m sure you did fabulous. Braver than I! I was a TV host and still clammed up doing anything live :\
