You know that song, “it’s a new dawn, it’s a new day…”? I think it’s from Dreamgirls but I haven’t actually seen the movie so I could be wrong.
2009 was a pretty good year for me, everything sort of stayed status quo but a few noteworthy events did take place (hope so, right!?!)
Looking back over my blog, I think more happened this year then I even realized:
- I finally started this blog after thinking about it for maybe a year.
- I cooked tofu for the first time…now I LOVE it (tempeh still scares me, though).
- Mitch’s grandfather unexpectedly passed away…we miss you, Walt!
- I rocked a “real” two piece swimsuit in Palm Springs (and at the beach, once, over the summer) for the first time. Big step for me!
- I ran over the Coronado Bridge at the Bay Bridge Run and subsequently made a fool out of myself when I thought my car got towed but in reality I just forgot where I had parked.
- I signed up for a 10k and met some awesome bloggers in town for the Rock and Roll Marathon.
- My dog had a grand ole party going through our trash. I’m still paying off the vet bills. She’s lucky she’s pretty.
- I learned how to make fresh spring rolls. Good stuff, I tell ya.
- A group of us went to LA to watch a taping the The Soup. Over three hours of driving for a 30-minute taping, but SO worth it.
- Mitch and I camped and hiked around the Grand Canyon (in August, I might add)
- I hosted a blogger giveaway (that was fun! more to come I promise!) and self-hosted my blog.
- I decided to put things out into the universe to see what might come back.
- I tested the limits of what I could do with diet and fitness in a 12-week bootcamp program
- I ran my first 10k (automatic PR baby!).
- AND I on a blogger giveaway hosted by Oikos Greek yogurt! Yoga retreat in Massachusetts and Boston vacation, here we come! I can’t wait to start planning this trip in more detail.
- Mitch and I hosted out second-annual Holiday party. Where we served the best holiday drink ever, hot chocolate with spiced rum and whipped cream.
I’m determined to make 2010 a great year. I’m realizing more than ever before that I can control my surroundings (to a certain extent, of course) and it’s up to me to make the best choices I can for my health and happiness. I have a few goals/resolutions for the upcoming year, but I don’t think they will be too difficult to accomplish:
- Complete a 1/2 marathon. The plan is to do the Disneyland 1/2 in September. I’ve roped two girlfriends into doing this race as well, so I’m pretty sure it’ll happen, barring some freak injury or something (knock on wood!)
- Re-apply to grad school. AND assuming that goes well and I don’t chicken out, complete my first semester. (I want to get my master’s in nonprofit management).
- Try one new restaurant a month. I want to have more “out of the house” date nights, and I also want to explore some of the new restaurants that have opened in San Diego the last few years. This goal will help with both. First up: one of the participating eateries of San Diego Restaurant Week!
- Find my “happy weight” and stay there. I’m not 100% sure what that is, or maybe I’m already there, but I want to get to a place where I feel comfortable in my skin and body, where I feel strong and healthy, but where I also get to enjoy cake and Mexican food and wine once in a while…and not all at once (unless it’s my birthday maybe…)
- Improve my photography skills, including maybe getting a new camera (I’m SO indecisive when it comes to spending money, especially since I have a vacation to save for!). I’m taking a nature-photography class in a few weeks and I’m hoping I’ll learn some things that will help my overall skillz as well.
I actually have a few other ones too that are a little too personal to post on the blog. But I think I’m in a really good place right now where I know the aspects of my life that I want to improve, and I also know the aspects that I am happy with the way they are. Does that make sense?
I hope all of you out there have the best year you can have! It’s a new year…a fresh start on things, for many things. Let’s take advantage of it, ok?

Oooh, 2010 is SO the year for half-marathons. We’re so going to own them. I hope
I love what you said about controlling your surroundings. I’m at the point where I’m realizing that too. For so long I thought my future was determined by things I couldn’t control, but it’s not! You started blogging around the same time as me, didn’t you? We both have big blogaversaries coming up!
yay for trying tofu and loving it!! tempeh is a fickle food, I find it only taste good when it is seasoned with lots of tofu!
good luck with your half marathon training girlie & finding your happy weight
happy 2010
I love your positive attitude!! You make me feel like I can do anything, just the way you write
I didn’t know you were involved in non-profit management. That’s pretty neat. Good luck with that, and keep us updated. I’d love to see some posts about what you learn in class with that major! Very curious.
HAve a great day!
Great positive attitude! Good luck with your 1/2 marathon training, I am thinking about signing up for one, you just inspired me!
I want to run my first 5K this year! Baby steps for me!
Hey Hallie!
Regarding your question on my blog, it really depends on what time you workout (as far as what to eat before a workout) and it also depends on how your body reacts to food. For example, I workout in the morning, but I eat oatbran before I workout. For some people that may not be good (GI distress) but for me it’s great! I think it’s good to just make sure you aren’t too full, or you aren’t hungry. So if your stomach is growling, eat something small to hold you over. If you aren’t hungry, don’t eat! But bring a snack with you to the gym either way, in case you get hungry while working out. I can’t workout whiel I’m hungry!! SOYJOY or any other 100-150 calories bars are good.
so fun to hear the past events of your year!
