Playing Ketchup

Just kidding, this isn’t really a post about playful condiments. But I am a word nerd, through and through, so the title was funny to me! This post is really a “catch up” on a few things that I’ve been meaning to blog about, but haven’t done yet.

1. Blogger meet-up

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting Lynn from The Actor’s Diet, who was here in town because her film White on Rice was featured at the San Diego Asian Film Festival. I met her at Balboa Park for a lovely (albeit warm…I’m such a baby!) walk along with her hubby and pup. Lynn and Abe are both so sweet and super cool, and Julius is an adorable little doggie. It was a great way to spend a morning and I’m glad we got a chance to meet up. I can’t wait to see White on Rice when it comes to San Diego in a few weeks!

2. Project Feed Me

Have you seen Natalie’s blog, NO NO 2 YO YO? It’s a good one, so you should check it out. Natalie has brilliantly started a campaign to get food bloggers (and non-food bloggers) to support their local food banks though her Project Feed Me. Check it out; it’s a wonderful concept and I’m excited to be a part of it. It’s not too late to sign up! The first two weeks’ items for were chili and tuna, both of which I had on hand so I didn’t even have to buy anything! (Although I’ll have to buy more chili before Mitch notices his stash has dwindled).

In order to spruce up a photo of canned goods, I included my new copy of “San Diego Natural Guide,” a listing of organic restaurants, health-food stores, yoga classes, natural health/wellness providers…basically they could rename this the “Stuff Hallie Needs to Be the Hippie She Really Is” guide. Oh and there’s a photo of Mitch and me from a wedding we went to this summer, because I think it’s cute.

3. Running Update

I ran 4.5 miles this weekend…a new PDR after my four-mile adventure. I averaged 11:04 min/mile, but really only because I booked it at the end. Still, I was really happy and I feel confident that I’ll hit 5 miles this weekend. I think increasing mileage by only 1/2 mile at a time is really helping me, because I tell myself, “if I can run 4, I can run 4.5…if I can run 4.5, I can run 5.” It really helps my confidence and running is SUCH a mental game for me. I’m still really happy with my running and that it’s not torture anymore; it’s something I look forward to!

Which brings me to my question for tonight:

Do you stretch regularly? I usually make sure I spend some time stretching after my long runs, but I’ve been bad about doing it after my shorter weekday runs (2-3 miles) or after bootcamp. I’ve read so many conflicting things about stretching: always do it before and after a workout, warm up then stretch before, stretching doesn’t do anything, etc. I know many of you readers work out on a regular basis so I was wondering how often/when you stretch and why. Thanks!

  1. loved meeting you too, dear! i loooove to stretch. it’s one of my favorite activities, holding stretches for long periods of time (why i love yin yoga so much) weirdly, i never do it. not even after working out. huh.

I like increasing my mileage by half a mile a week too…better mentally, and I think my body likes it better!!

I used to stretch before workouts, until I read that you can actually injure yourself by stretching cold muscles. It’s better to wait until after your warm-up to stop and stretch if you’re going to do it. Personally, I find I benefit more from just doing a longer warm-up. As for after running, I stretch religiously! About 15 minutes of foam rolling and making sure I stretch out all my trouble spots. One thing that helps a lot too is icing. When I started increasing my mileage, I started getting pain in my ankles and knees that would last for days after. 10 minutes of icing can make it feel like I didn’t even run that day!

Great job on the run. I find that once I run 3 miles, it gets easier after that for some reason.

I am not good at stretching. I need to do it more often.

  4. Great job on the distance….I’ve only made it to 3.5 miles so far but I really think I can do four….I like your plan of adding a half mile at a time. I do stretch after every workout but I probably don’t stretch as long as I should.
