I’m up early this morning, well actually it’s the same time I always get up to work out, but instead I’m going into work early to help with some TV crews that are coming to the Museum. So my workout gets pushed to the afternoon, which is OK because I like the Thursday afternoon trainer.
As part of my bootcamp (which, by the way, is over ONE WEEK from today! Mixed emotions but honestly, more happy than sad that I’m almost done) I’ve been eating a pretty high-protein diet. Did you see Janetha’s post yesterday about carb-cycling? It’s basically that. I’ve been using the same vanilla whey protein powder for awhile now, and I really wanted to try out some different brands and flavors for when I need to restock.
But, um, that stuff’s not cheap, so I asked the folks over at Jay Robb if they would send me a few samples of their flavored protein powders to review for the bloggie, and so I could decide if maybe I wanted to switch to their product in the future. I know HEAB is a big fan of Jay Robb, and not just because he give you the sexy eyes on his product packaging.
They sent me four flavors, which I sampled over the course of…four days. I mixed the chocolate and strawberry flavors with water (not together though…you know what I mean) and the pina colada and orange flavors with unsweetened vanilla almond milk. I like adding PP to smoothies and such, but I wanted to get a clear idea of the flavors.
One thing I liked about these is that they mixed really well with both the water and the almond milk. Let me tell you, I love chunky guacamole, but chunky protein drink is a little gag-inducing.
Here was my order of preference, flavor-wise:
- Chocolate
- Orange (but I like that orange/vanilla Dreamsicle flavor a lot)
- Strawberry
- Pina Colada (I actually thought this was kind of gross; can’t win them all!)
I definitely think I’m going to buy some Jay Robb protein powder once I’m done with the stuff I already have. I really like the company’s standards for using ethical products, stevia instead of a non-natural sweetener, etc. Also, they are based out of North County San Diego, so I feel like I am supporting local businesses by purchasing Jay Robb products. More and more I’ve been thinking about how to “vote with my wallet” when it comes to my food choices, so that’s important to me. (I feel the same way about Kashi since they are also based out of San Diego. Side note, how AWESOME would it be to work for Kashi? Just sayin…).
Anyway, I’m very grateful to the PR people at Jay Robb for sending me a few free samples of their product to review. If you’ve tried these protein powders or are will try them, let me know what you think!
I have to finish getting ready and head into work, but I have a question for you serious exercisers out there. As I mentioned, tonight I’m going to bootcamp after work, and then I have to get home and take Nina for a walk. Our walks aren’t exactly strolls; I take her on a one-hour loop around my neighborhood, going up some steep hills. It’s not nearly as challenging as it was pre-bootcamp (yay, increased endurance!) but it still gets my heart rate up. So we’re looking at 2 hours of activity, pretty much. Should I have a light snack after bootcamp and before our walk, or should I just GO when I get home from the gym and then eat afterwards? Should I just play it by ear?
Thanks! Have a lovely day, friends.

Way to go on the Boot Camp! You should be so proud of yourself. I’ll have to try the PP. I’m really picky about it. As for the workout this afternoon, play it by ear. Your body will tell you what you need.

I agree it would be SUPER amazing to work for KAshi. I plan on giving them my resume at this weeks ADA conference in Colorado! As for your question, I would say have a light snack after bootcamp (protein and carbs). But, if you aren’t hungry at that time, just GO! But bring a snack with you in case oyu do get hungry. It’s never fun to be stranded without food.

I did a bootcamp (although I don’t think it was an intense as yours) and I was definitely happy when it was over. Mostly because I could sleep later in the mornings!
I’ve only had the Jay Robb Vanilla powder, but I like it.

I tried to order Jay Robb once, then immediately cancelled it when I saw how much it would cost to ship to Canada :\ I’ve heard nothing but good things about it though!
Yay for only having one week of boot camp left!! I’m so proud of you for getting through it! Do they give you anything as a prize?
I would play it by ear in terms of the snack after bootcamp. But chances are, since walking is low impact on your tummy – it may start rumbling mid-walk. Maybe half a bar or an apple or something? Nothing too big, just something with a little sugar to power you through that last hour

I always go with playing it by ear; gotta listen to the bod
