My friend Leta, who got me into the whole CSA thing, told me once that when you put some energy out into the universe, you will be amazed at how the world will respond and something will happen. I don’t generally believe in that kind of stuff, so I just kind of let it go.
However, I’ve been thinking for awhile about ways to supplement my income (aren’t we all?) and while I’m willing to hostess at a restaurant or work front desk at a spa, I didn’t really want to do either. So I put it out into the universe that I wanted to do something different, and now, things are starting to come back to me, and I’m so excited!
The first opportunity (and I’m not sure if I mentioned this on the blog or not; if so I’m sorry) I found through that same friend, Leta. She told me about a friend of hers who was going through some tough medical issues and needed some help around the house. She’s a really bright, thoughtful person who has just had some rough luck lately. Leta put the two of us together, and I’m going to be working for her a few hours here and there. Last weekend, I went to her house and cooked soup for her since she had oral surgery last week. Making a few bucks while helping someone who really needs it…how awesome is that? And I got to cook a real dish with multiple ingredients, something I’m desperately missing on my current diet (day 5 week 8 …counting down the days, folks).
Then, I decided I wanted to try to get some freelance writing jobs. As you may know, I do writing/editing/PR as my “day job,” and I thought I might be able to offer those skills to organizations that don’t have in-house support. But I’ve never freelanced in my life, so I was really unsure how to begin. Well to make a long story short (haha) I met a fellow bootcamp participant who happens to be publishing a new magazine here in town. She’s interested in hiring me to work for her doing writing, ad sales, etc. It’s a natural foods/wellness magazine…pretty much my dream writing job! I haven’t done anything with her yet, but the seed was planted.
AND, when she mentioned to our trainer that we might be working together, he mentioned that he needed some PR and writing help for his gym! So again, that hasn’t been finalized yet, but just the potential of some freelance work is really exciting.
My point of telling you all this isn’t to brag (because not much has happened yet anyway, realistically) but to share my experience with “putting things out into the universe.” It works! I know I am making these things happen for myself, but I really believe that just saying my goals out loud, and even just thinking about them a lot, is somehow paying off and will continue to do so.
I’m testing this theory by telling people that I’m going to do the Carlsbad ½ Marathon at the end of January. I know I have to get past my 10k first, but I figure if I tell people I’m doing something, the odds of me actually doing it are higher. So far, it’s working. And I’ll keep you posted.
Anything you’d like to put out into the universe? Have you ever tried something like that, and how has it worked?

That’s great. Hope that everything comes together and, especially, the half-mary! If you want it, you can achieve it.

Wow! Congrats! I’m trying to start some freelance writing too, but it’s a TOUGH market right now. You are really lucky, and that wellness mag does sound like the dream writing job!

Wow, I’ve never tried it, but it clearly worked for you! That’s so exciting. I am happy for you, as those sound like two fantastic opportunities.
I’m putting it out there that I am starting my own business one day. For sure, no matter what, no one will stop me!

Thanks for this post. I’m a new reader through Oh She Glows. I am currently attempting to return to work after being an at-home mom for about a year with my first child, and am in need of a job! It’s been difficult to find anything that has good hours, benefits, and the sort of salary we’d need. It’s also been a tough transition to place my daughter into daycare. So … into the universe: I’d like to find a great job that allows me to balance family, life, and work OR win the lottery

Worth a try. I’m putting it out to the universe that I want my daughter to be the number 1 in the country in her athletics events.
