Spicy Oatmeal Success!

There are a bunch of foods I didn’t eat before I started reading food blogs. Or at least, not nearly as much as I eat them now (or WILL be eating them again after next Friday when my bootcamp is OVAH!!). These include: almond butter, banana-PB oatmeal, pumpkin anything, Greek yogurt, kale chips (which is really the only way I eat kale), and Puffins cereal. Who would have thought that the internet could totally change a person’s diet?

This morning I added a new item to the rotating list of foods and food combinations going into my belly. Spicy Oats! I’d seen a few bloggers make oatmeal with savory toppings rather than sweet (even Mark Bittman did it) but I thought that cheese was a required ingredient in savory oats and since I don’t like, cheese, savory oatmeal was no-go for me.

But this weekend when I saw Allison’s guest post on Leftovers for Lunch about the famous GDW spicy oats, I checked out Green Dog Wine to see how she did it, as well as Leah’s versions. Since I like eggs now, which I didn’t until a few months ago, and I LOVE all things spicy, I had a feeling it would be delicious.

I cooked 1/2 cup oats in water and while it was cooking, I made my usual 1 egg, 2 egg-white scramble with onions, bell peppers, and canned green chilis. Then instead of eating them separately, I put those hands together (Friends reference, anyone?) and topped it all off with chopped cilantro and hot sauce.

Yum! This was a nice change of pace and even though I prefer my banana-PB-flax oats, I will be definitely be having this for breakfast from time to time. Here’s a ”mid bite” shot a la Kath:

I decided it needed more hot sauce after mixing it up so I got out my trusty Sriracha and went to town. It was SO good…the Sriracha with the cilantro gave it a Thai flavor, whereas the green chilies with the Mexican hot sauce gave it a Mexican flavor. And a Jewish girl ate it in the company of her Irish boyfriend and Nova Scotian dog. It was quite the multicultural morning.

I know this isn’t a new question in blog land (none of my questions are, it seems), but I’m still curious, what foods or food combinations have you introduced into your life because you read it on a blog?

Happy Tuesday! (I thought it was Wednesday earlier today, and I got really sad)

I am refraining from yelling something about you not liking cheese and eggs at one point. But I suspect you probably got that a lot, so I’ll spare you ;)

I think the biggest thing was sweet oatmeal. I aaaalways ate my oats with fruit, cereal and yogurt stirred in. Then I tried the spoon of nut butter on top, and the rest is history :) Another big thing are dates and figs. Loved both in baked goods, but never ate them plain before. Now they’re two of my favourite snacks!

I hear ya! Seriously, my diet has changed for the better since being introduced to the blog world. For starters, oatmeal! I never used to eat it before, now I do at least twice a week. Also the spaghetti squash I made last night, that was new to me! Hmmm…what else? Oh my new favorite snack, popcorn with cinnamon and sugar, that’s new too! I love it.

Great looking oats!! Savory oats are actually new to me too, but I’ve yet to try them. They are on my list.

  5. Hahaha I love your multicultural morning. I’m half Jewish & half Chinese; so every day is a multicultural morning for me :)

I never ate oats or nut butters as frequently as I have since discovering food blogs.

  6. PS LOVE the savory oats! I made mine without cheese–with soy sauce, spinach, mushrooms & roasted red peppers. It was soooo good–but I need to try your spicy version!

Wow, Spicy Oats. I hadn’t thought about that. I need to try them. I hate it when I think it is one day and then realize it isn’t. Especially when I think it’s Friday. And it’s like Tuesday. Total bummer.
