When Facebook Asks, You Answer

facebook

Ok, that’s not really how it happened, but for some reason this message on my computer cracked me up (just like when Facebook asked me to confirm my status as my mother’s daughter). Can you imagine if someone really was proposed to that way? And, on a related note, how does anyone keep secrets in the age of social media, and how did anyone spread the word about exciting news before Facebook?

Since I hit the “confirm” button, it must be true! Mitch and I got engaged last night. It was pretty awesome, and I’m still kinda getting over the shock. I had a tiny thought in the back of my head it might happen, but I was trying to not think about it because I wanted to enjoy my anniversary even if he didn’t propose.

Before dinner, as planned, we went to La Jolla to take some photos. I took my little tripod and we set the self-timer.

This viewpoint overlooking the beach has special significance for us because for our first date, we grabbed Starbucks and then went to this exact spot and chatted for hours. I hadn’t been back there in…exactly four years! It was a gorgeous day, as you can tell.

We took about three or four photos with sunglasses on, off, etc (still trying to rock the arm thing in pictures! And I still think I look dumb.). The sun was not in a great spot for the pics at this time of day, but we managed. I’m not crazy about how I look in any of the photos (well, except the ones below) but whatever.

Then, before I knew what was happening, here we were.

Now…this wasn’t totally what either one of us were expecting. He was trying to capture the moment on camera, so he sorta blurted out the big question. Then, due to nerves, he grabbed the wrong hand, and also due to nervous, I started cracking up. But looking back on it, we wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. This photo is so….us.

(insert phone calls to parents and text messages to friends before my phone died, whoops)

(insert celebratory dinner that included more wine than should ever be discussed on a healthy-living blog. And Italian rum cake with a candle in it “on the house” from the restaurant.)

Mitch, knowing this was going to be a special night, booked us a really nice room at a hotel that was around the corner from the restaurant. Actually, it was a suite. Complete with full kitchen, two bathrooms, etc.

The rest of the night was spent reading Facebook messages (please tell me we aren’t the only ones with the FB sh*t, my newly married/engaged friends!) and me staring at my ring. And I still can’t stop looking at it. Not only because it’s pretty darn lovely, but also because of what it symbolizes. We’ve talked about marriage a lot but now it’s like…OK, we’re REALLY doing this now, holy crap!!

The hotel staff gave us some flowers and had this note to accompany them:

Mission. Accomplished.

I’m really happy! And a little overwhelmed. And more than a little hungover. But mostly, just really really excited.

Oh em geeeee!!! TOO funny that you were talking about the photos in your last post, and that he was setting it up as a way to propose!! SO frickin’ cute. Congrats you two!!! If there is ever a time to drink excessive amounts of wine, it’s night you get engaged ;)

  11. CONGRATULATIONS!! You two look beautiful together and I’m so happy for you. remember when Nick and I celebrated our four year in May, and we both complained about our men and their lack of a RING?! Your man wins!!!! GO MITCH!! :)

BTW the way, living in San Diego DEFINITELY beats Ohio when it comes to vitamin D (and most parts of our country, really). I think you are fine in terms of vitamin D and you are lucky to have that sun! I sometimes wish we had it all year round, just for the vitamin D. haha, seriously.

    Congrats again!
